United Club Newark Airport Review

Newark United Club
Brand New 30,000 Square Feet United Club

United Club Newark Airport

I recently visited the Over 30,000 Square Feet Newark, NJ United Club near Gate C123.  I first stopped by here on the way to Johannesburg as I wrote about in my post about The Trials and Tribulations of a Travel Addict.  I had about an hour to spend here before our flight to Johannesburg and on the way back I had a three hour layover.  This is the biggest lounge I have ever been to!  It features 2 Buffets, a bar, a coffee bar with barista style drinks, 6 shower stalls, foosball tables, a kids area with books and work stations with plenty of charging ports.

How I Was Able to Access The Lounge

I was able to access the lounge because I have Star Alliance Gold Status from Turkish Airlines.  I found out that you can email Turkish Airlines and request a status match from your current Airline Status.  I have American Airlines Platinum Pro status.  I also matched my status to Delta, United and ITA Airways.  Having United status doesn’t automatically give you access to The United Club.  If had been traveling on an International Business Class ticket I would have been able to access the lounge but unfortunately I was not.  I knew it was very unlikely that I would get upgraded to United Polaris so I did the Turkish Airlines Status Match to ensure that I could access the lounge.  United’s Policy is, if you have Star Alliance Gold status from a partner airline you can access the United Club and bring 1 guest no matter what cabin you are flying in.  Delta also have this policy which is why I status matched to ITA Airways (The new airline in Italy that replaced Alitalia).  Although I have the American Express Platinum card and get access to the Delta Sky Club and five other lounge collections.  For more on lounge access, read my post on The Ultimate Guide to Airport Lounges.

They had two buffet areas.  In the evening on the flight out, they featured various types of sandwiches and burgers, meat, cheese, fruit and salad.  In the morning on my return to the club, they have a continental style breakfast featuring bacon, eggs, pastries, coffee cakes, croissants and much more.  The food was good but it wasn’t the best airport lounge food I have ever had.  That was at The Johannesburg Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse.
