5 Reasons To Apply For The Capital One Venture X Card

Last year Capital One introduced the Venture X Card.  It is a card that can be considered one of the top travel credit cards.  I consider The American Express Platinum Card to be the best travel card.  It has a lot of benefits but a very high annual fee ($695).  The Venture X Card has only a $395 annual fee.  It features a $300 annual travel credit which effectively reduces the annual fee to $95 as long as you book $300 of travel in the Capital One Travel Portal.  It also reimburses $100 for Global Entry or TSA Precheck.  It also features access to three Lounge Networks, the brand new Capital One Lounges, Priority Pass and Plaza Premium Lounges.  You will also get access to Capital One Entertainment which recently featured tickets to Major League Baseball games for as low as 5,000 miles.

The Bonus Offer

This card is currently offering 75,000 miles after spending $4,000 within the first three months after account opening.  You will earn a minimum of 83,000 miles since the card earns atleast 2 miles per dollar spent.  It also earns 5 miles per dollar on flights booked through the Capital One Travel Portal and 10 miles per dollar on Hotels and Rental Cars booked though the Capital One Travel Portal as well as 10 miles per dollar on rentals though Turo.  This card doesn’t really earn miles, they aren’t Delta, United or American Miles.  They are transferrable points that can be transferred to 15 different airlines and  2 hotels (Choice Privileges and Accor).  In my opinion their best transfer partners are Flying Blue (Air France/KLM), Virgin Red (Virgin Atlantic), Singapore Airlines and Turkish Airlines.  83,000 miles is more than enough for a round trip to Europe.  Air France frequently offers pricing one way in Business Class for about 55,000 and a return trip in Coach for close to 30,000 miles.  My strategy is to book international trips with foreign airlines such as Air France, Singapore Airlines and Turkish Airlines because they have awards that are usually at a fixed price.  Delta, United and American have variable pricing and at times a round trip Business Class award could cost over 500,000 miles.

Capital One Lounges

With the launch of the Capital One Venture X Card, Capital One announced they are opening two Capital One Lounges.  Currently the one lounge open is at DFW airport in Dallas.  Capital One Venture X cardholders get complimentary access and can bring in 2 guests for free.  If you have the Capital One Venture card, you get 2 complimentary lounge visits per year.  They are also opening lounges in Denver and in Washington DC (IAD) later this year.  I haven’t had the opportunity to visit the DFW lounge yet but I may in a couple weeks during a layover on the way to Las Vegas.  The lounges seem to be on par with the Centurion and the better Delta and United lounges.  If Dallas, Denver or DC are your home airport and you don’t otherwise have access to one of the Airline Lounges this could be great benefit.

Priority Pass Lounges and Restaurants

The next lounge collection that you get for free with this card is Priority Pass.  The Priority Pass program includes over 1,300 lounges worldwide.  Most travel credit cards nowadays will give you Priority Pass access but with this card you get access to Priority Pass Restaurants.  This is a benefit that was removed from American Express cards in 2019.  At the Restaurants that are included in the program, you will receive a $28 credit per person.  Since you are allowed to have 2 guests you will receive a total credit of $84 off you bill.  They currently have 29 restaurants in 20 different airports.  The Priority Pass lounges in the US are mostly smaller lounges with a small selection of food and drinks.  It beats paying for Starbucks but there are better lounge options depending on your airport.

Plaza Premium Lounges

Capital One just announced that Capital One Venture X cards now feature access to Plaza Premium Lounges.  Plaza Premium is a global collection of lounges that are much nicer than the Priority Pass lounges.  There are over 1,400 Plaza Premium lounges in 140 countries.  In the US they only have 5 lounges, at DFW, Newark, JFK, San Francisco and Washington DC (IAD).  it includes access to the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse Lounges.  I recently visited the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse in Johannesburg.  At most lounges food is served buffet style.  At the Virgin Atlantic lounges, they serve food al a carte.  I am planning on visiting their lounge at JFK later this year.

Transfer Partners

This card earns transferrable points that you can transfer to certain airlines and hotels.  It enables you to be flexible and transfer points to the airline or hotel of your choice when you want to.  With airline and hotel credit cards you earn points that can only be used in their respective programs.  Capital One miles transfer to their partners at a 1 to 1 ratio which means 1 mile equals 1 mile with the partner airline/hotel.  There are some ways to use these mile for domestic flights but you get the most value when you use your miles for International Business Class flights.

Bottom Line

The Capital One Venture X card is a great travel card but it is for a specific type of person.  If you are not loyal to a certain airline and you don’t have access to airport lounges then this is the card for you.  Considering that Capital One is constantly adding new benefits, this card is high on my list of the top travel credit cards. This card competes with the Amex Platinum ($695 Annual Fee) and the Chase Sapphire Reserved ($550 Annual Fee) but it only has a $395 annual fee but can be reduced to $95 by booking $300 credited by booking travel in the Capital One Travel Portal.
