5 Reasons To Get The Hilton Surpass Card
The American Express Hilton Surpass card is one of the best hotel credit cards. There are other cards that offer more benefits but also have much higher annual fees. Considering that this card only has a $95 annual fee, it is a great deal. It is currently offering a 130,000 Bonus Points plus a $130 Statement Credit if you spend $2,000 within three months from the time you signed up. After paying the $95 annual fee you would end up making $35 plus the bonus points if you signup with this offer. My game plan on this is to get this card and use it for all of my regular expenses. Remember, never carry a balance, pay your card off in full every month and certainly do not ever pay interest. There is nothing interesting about interest.
The biggest reason for getting this card is the bonus offer. You will earn atleast 132,000 points. After spending the required $2,000 in the first three months. 130,000 points if more than enough for 2 nights at the brand new Doubletree by Hilton Rome Monti hotel. If you book early enough you should be able to secure a rate of 60,000 points per night. The hotel is in a fantastic location within a few minutes walk to most destinations. The Doubletree brand is nice (Hey you get a free cookie, who doesn’t like a free cookie) but you can do better. If you want step it up a notch, book The Biltmore Mayfair, LXR Hotels and Resort in London. It is currently bookable for some nights for 95,000 points. This bonus would be enough for 1 night and if you continue to use it as your main card you can earn the required points to book a second night. I have a reservation booked at this hotel in September using 2 Free Night Certificates and 95,000 points. There are many more examples of how to great tremendous value out of your Hilton points.
Can you really get airport lounge access from a Hotel credit card? Yes you can and that card is, The Hilton Surpass Card. This card comes with a complimentary Priority Pass Select membership. You will receive 10 passes per calendar year to access the Priority Pass lounges. There are over 1,300 Priority Pass lounges across 600 cities in 148 countries. I have to admit the Priority Pass lounges in the US are not as good as the Airline lounges or the Centurion lounges. I was recently at the Club at MSY in New Orleans and it was pretty good. they have a QR code on table that you can scan and order from your phone and everything is free. My favorite Priority Pass lounge is the IGA lounge in Istanbul. I also enjoyed the lounge in Barcelona. See my post on the Ultimate Guide to Airport Lounge Access.
A great feature of this card is that you can earn a Free Night Certificate after spending $15,000 points in a calendar year. My game plan is to make this card my card for everything until I spend $15,000. Let’s say if staying 3 nights at the Biltmore in London is your goal, if you spend $15,000 you would earn at a minimum 45,000 points. If you add that the 132,000 bonus points you would only be 13,000 points short for a 3rd free night. I also have the Hilton Honors Business card that also offers a free night after spending $15,000. My game plan is to spend 15,000 on one and then once I complete the spending move onto the other card. Sometimes I do use other cards but when I have any large expenses I put them on these cards if I haven’t yet met the spending requirement.
You will also receive Hilton Honors Gold Status with this card. Some of the benefits of Gold status are, complimentary room upgrades, free breakfast at certain properties, earn 80% bonus points in paid stays and Milestone Bonuses. I think the best part of Gold status is getting free breakfast. Nowadays certain properties are only providing a daily food and beverage credit. I’ve had stays recently at Hilton properties in Belize and Barcelona and we did receive a full intercontinental breakfast. Let’s talk room upgrades! This is another great benefit, depending on availability, you could get upgraded from a standard room to Suite. Last year in Belize I was upgraded from a standard 2 bedroom room to a gigantic 2 bedroom, 3 bathroom townhome.
There are a lot of credit cards that earn 4 or 5 points per dollar in certain categories. Some people have a card for Gas, a card for Groceries and a card for Dining. This is the only card you need! You gas card is the Hilton Surpass card, your Groceries card is the Hilton Surpass card and your Dining card is the Hilton Surpass card. Oh by the way it also earns 12 points per dollar at Hilton hotels. So this is also your Hotel card too as long as you are staying at a Hilton. It earns 3 points per dollar on all other transactions.
